FAQS

Renovate. Design. Build.

frequently asked questions

  • What is an estimated cost for my project?

All projects are unique. The cost will be determined by design and finishes you choose.  We will guide you through this process to help you stay within your budget.

  • What is your fee structure?

We work on a cost-plus basis due to the nature of renovation work.

  • Do you require a deposit?

We do not ask for a deposit before we start.  We will invoice you as we incur costs.

  • Which trades or vendors require deposits?

Our subcontractors and vendors that are making major purchases on our behalf will usually ask for a 50% deposit. Some examples are cabinets, countertops, doors, and finished materials.

  • How are payments handled?

Invoices are due upon receipt.  We accept wire transfers, checks, Venmo and Zelle

  • Why should we use Square One Construction?

The best answer is to read our Google reviews.  We provide exceptional project management and work with only top tier subcontractors. As you will see from our reviews, it’s working!

  • When can we start?

We can typically start within a couple of weeks, but the determining factors have much more to do with making sure we have a plan in place. We will work with you to get materials chosen and details agreed upon prior to our starting so that the project will run smoothly and reduce the amount of time the project lasts.

  • Where do I make selections?

We work with a large number of vendors in the Scottsdale area. Based on your input, we will guide you to the most appropriate sources.

  • Do I need an interior designer?

We love having a designer involved with our projects, but it may not be necessary if you feel comfortable doing it yourself.  The advantage of a designer is having a resource who knows the current trends and where to go to get those specials things you may be looking for.

  • Do I need an architect?

We typically only need an architect when professional drawings are needed to get a permit.

  • Do I need permits?

Virtually all of our projects require permits.  As soon as we move any plumbing fixtures or electrical wiring, we need a permit. The same is true of any structural work that is done.  Many remodel projects only require simple permits that are obtained quickly and in many cases, online.  We will handle all the permitting and required inspections.

  • What is your standard for water-proofing showers?

Our standard waterproofing for showers is to install a Kerdi membrane over the drywall as a first step.  This membrane is designed to catch any moisture that gets behind the tile and funnel it directly to the drain.

  • Which paint brand do you recommend?

Our painters typically get their paint from Dunn Edwards.

  • Can you remodel my pool and backyard?

We have renovated a number of pools and backyards over the years.  With outdoor living being so much a part of the Arizona lifestyle, updating the backyard often becomes part of the overall project.

  • Do I need to upgrade our electrical system?

Many older homes have electrical panels that are too small for the electrical needs of today.  One of the first things we look at is your panel to see if it is appropriately sized for your needs.

  • Do I need to upgrade our plumbing?

Many older homes have plumbing materials that are inferior by today’s standards. When we run into that situation, we have our plumbers evaluate your situation to see what the best course of action will be.

  • What are your quality control standards?

We are onsite monitoring the work of our subcontractors every day.  If we wouldn’t accept a finish in our own homes, we won’t accept it in yours either!

  • Do I need to move out during construction?

There can be unique exceptions to this, but yes!  If one part of the home is being remodeled, it is unavoidable that dust will be tracked from the construction zone into other areas of the home.  There are also safety concerns with living in a construction zone.  Completely moving out of the home is typically required.
